 Movies based on real stories are the most exciting scenes that the audience eagerly awaits, but the excitement to watch can be doubled when it's a horror movie. Here I am going to list horror and scary movies, based on real stories.

1) The Serpent and the Rainbow(1988) 

The story is about an anthropologist from Harvard University, travelling to Haiti to get a mysterious powder, whose job is to suppress the human spirit and curb any human engine. 

The Real Story: The events of the movie are based on a book written by Wade Davis entitled- The Serpent and the Rainbow. Davis himself faced horrifying scientific stories from centuries ago. In this book, he listed his amazing experiences in identifying the process of turning humans into zombies or mutants. 

2) An American Crime(2007) 

The story is about the parents of Sylvia and Jenny, who decide to leave the daughters in the house of a woman named Gertrude. They left the house in search of money. Gertrude decided to punish the girls. 

The Real Story: The murder of the girl, Sylvia and her sister, is the most terrible of the crimes in Indiana. It is difficult to imagine that there are people who are capable of carrying out such crimes in the first place since the perpetrators of the crime were the children of Gertrude, who beat and tortured the girls. Most disgusting  is that the neighbours knew what was happening and no one tried to intervene to save the girls. 

3) The Mothman Prophecies(2002) 

The story is about journalist john Klein and his wife, who decide to buy a new home. But they are in a car accident after visiting a house for sale. After the incident, the wife claims that she saw a strange creature. 

The Real Story: The movie is based on a book written by the John Keel. John studied witness accounts of the so called "moth-man" and came up with research he had prepared himself. The last time this creature was seen before the collapse of the silver bridge, which killed 46 people. 

4) Monster(2003) 

The story revolves around a "prostitute" named Aileen Wuornos, who is beaten and raped by one of her agents, killing him in self defence, with a gun that hides in her bag. After that incident, Elaine decided to kill all her clients she thought deserved to die. It follows its law and does not kill those who seem to be good, not bad. 

The True Story: The story of the movie is indeed true, and embodies the life of Ellen, who was sentenced to six death sentences and executed on 9 October 2002. 

5) An American Haunting(2005) 

The story revolves around the happy Bell family that everyone respects, but a curse for the family. She is visited by a ghost who wants to kill a family member. 

The True Story: 35 books tell of this family, attacked by a mysterious spirit. There was something supernatural that tortured the family and exhausted its members, and turned their lives into an unbearable hell for many years. So this mysterious thing killed a family member. The murder of john bell is the only case in american history that has been listed as a ghost murder. 

6) Changeling (2008) 

The story goes on in the 1930's. It tells the story of the disappearance of Walter Collins, the son of a woman named Christine. Police found a boy, but the woman knows he is not her son. Christine is desperate to ask reporters for help, but her city government is not interested until people claim the woman is a mad mother. 

The Real Story: The movie captures the details of the so-called Winneville Chicken Coop Killings, a series of kidnapping and murder crimes committed against male children in Los Angeles. The perpetrators used lime to dispose of the bodies...and the rest were buried on a farm. The remains of some of the bodies were later found, probably one of them belonging to Walter Collins. 

7) The Conjuring (2013) 

The family lived in a home haunted by Bathsheba. The Warrens helped them. 

The Real Story: In 1970, a woman bought a doll for her baby. She stayed with her until she went to university and took her with her. But then the girls neighbour discovered that the doll had a private life. The couple, Edward and Lauren Warren, investigated the case and concluded that there was a demonic spirit in the doll called Annabella. 

8) The Nightmare (2015) 

The director meets the participants in his movie and re-embodies the dreams that each sees. This documentary shows the experience of eight different people who see the same dream, a shadow of a strange man showing them. 

The Real Story: The movie examines the phenomenon of sleep paralysis...With the help of eight people, the viewer can see what happens when someone is almost awake, but his consciousness is still not fully present. He is absorbed by everything that happens around him, but he is unable to move his body.
